Can You Paint Over Gloss Paint?

If you’re looking to upcycle gloss furniture or repaint skirting boards and trims, it’s important to remove the shiny finish first. Painting directly over gloss paint or varnish can interfere with the adhesion, causing it to peel or give an uneven finish.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to prepare glossy surfaces for painting using Krud Kutter Gloss-Off, so you can de-gloss without the hassle of sanding.

Painting over gloss without sanding

Krud Kutter Gloss-Off is a no rinse, liquid-sandpaper solution, designed to prepare high-gloss and hard-to-stick surfaces for painting — no sanding required. Follow these simple steps to prep glossy furniture, skirting boards, accessories and more for repainting.

You will need:

·         Krud Kutter Gloss-Off

·         A clean, coarse cloth

·         Protective gloves

·         Protective eyeglasses

Step 1

Spray Krud Kutter Gloss-Off directly onto the surface. Use a coarse, lint-free cloth to work it into the surface in a circular motion.

Step 2

Leave the solution to work for a few minutes then wipe off with a clean cloth, turning the cloth often to avoid any smears.

Step 3

The de-glossed surface now provides proper grip for a long-lasting finish. Gloss-Off can be coated after only 10 minutes, or when touch dry. We repainted this shelving unit with Matt Furniture Paint. The colour is our cool beige Hessian

And that’s it! Now you’re ready to paint over gloss without sanding. Krud Kutter Gloss-Off is the perfect solution for painting or refinishing glossy surfaces, and expertly helps new paint and varnish bond to old finishes.
