Get to Know: Cool Colours

Cool colours are relaxing and soothing, perfect for creating calm, serene spaces. Associated with clear skies and crisp winter days, cooler shades tend to recede, creating the illusion of a larger space in smaller rooms. Read on to discover our favourite cool colour schemes to transform your home.

What are cool colours?

Cool toned paint colours are usually made up of blue, green and purple, and variations such as cyan, emerald and fuchsia. Soft, delicate pastels such as duck egg blue, lilac or mint will instantly create a refreshing, airy space. Deeper shades of navy and indigo create a moody yet regal look.

Cool white paint with grey, blue or green undertones will balance the intense yellow light of south-facing rooms for a clean, modern vibe.

Blue

A pale blue with grey-green undertones, Marcella is a crisp cool shade that’s perfect for creating light, spacious rooms. Try pairing this wintry shade with pops of pastel pink, for a delicate yet effective contrast.

For something a shade darker, our intense Evening Blue will instantly create an elegant, sophisticated room. With subtle green undertones, this dramatic jewel tone leans towards teal for a cooler vibe that has associations with a comforting night sky. Try accenting with warm metals such as brass or copper for a sense of balance.

Green

If you’re looking for a cool tone green paint, Wanderlust is a great choice. A playful mint green, Wanderlust is a vibrant and refreshing shade that works well with other cool pastels, such as candy pink My Husband Said No and bright lilac Violet Macaroon.

A dusky green with cool grey undertones, Serenity is understated yet sophisticated. Keep things cool by pairing this muted shade with metallic blue accents, crisp whites and a pop of luscious burgundy.

Purple

Be My Mermaid is a vibrant lilac with cool blue undertones. A charming pastel, this sweet purple is ideal for kids’ rooms. Try pairing with our crisp white Cotton and simple furniture with clean lines, to allow the purple to take centre stage.

A more subtle take on the shade, cool lilac Wisteria is the perfect complement to brighter pops of colour. These built in shelves and brightly coloured books look great with a dusky purple backdrop.

Neutrals

Our cool grey paint Slate is perfect for creating a sleek, contemporary finish. Balance a cool toned grey paint with warm accents such as organic textures, warm wooden furniture and green plants to avoid a sterile look.

Cool white paint colours are a great way to create spacious rooms, as they reflect a lot of natural light. Moonstone is a delicate off-white with a touch of grey, ideal for a slow-paced cottagecore vibe.

Cool bedroom colour schemes

When choosing cool bedroom paint colours, it’s important to select a shade that promotes a calming atmosphere, to help you unwind and get ready for sleep. We love our cool beige paint Hessian paired with warm neutral Oyster for a sense of balance. Cool toned grey paint Dove has blue undertones for a simple yet elegant look.

Cool kitchen colour schemes

Cool colours work particularly well in a kitchen, as the less saturated, more subtle tones create a relaxed and tranquil feel.

Try pairing our dusky, grey-toned green Serenity with paler grey-green Aloe for a refreshing, cohesive effect. We also love our muted mint Leaplish paired with classic off-white Steamed Milk.
