What is water based paint?
Ready to get cracking on your next DIY project but want to make sure you know all the facts? Read on to find out everything you need to know about water-based paints and their benefits.
What are the advantages of water-based paints?
Water-based paint is manufactured with water as its main liquifying agent, instead of chemical solvents. Generally speaking, water-based paints have a lower level of VOCs, are low odour and can dry up to three times quicker than their solvent-based counterparts.
What is the difference between water-based and solvent-based paint?
Water-based paint
·Uses water as its main liquifying agent and has lower VOC levels
·Thinned with water, easy soap and water clean-up
·Reduced odour for more comfortable paint application
·Faster drying times
·Excellent adhesion and colour retention
Solvent-based paint
- Uses chemical solvents as its main liquifying agent
- Thinned with white spirit or other thinners
- More tolerant of weather conditions e.g. humidity and high temperature
- Excellent block resistance once fully dried
- Provides a tough finish with a higher gloss level
